I kind of loathe the question, “How are you?” I always want to answer honestly. And usually the honest answer is too layered, contradictory, or alive to fit neatly into a socially acceptable response. So it gets boiled down to: “Good.” “Fine.” How lame. I want to get deeper than that with people. I was listening to Vanessa Van Edwards talk about better questions to ask someone. One she suggested was: What are you excited about these days? Or: Tell me something good. If we want connection, we should ask connective questions.
